Huntsville residents have raised concerns about higher-than-usual power bills during recent city council meetings, according to online reports.
Residents Voice Concerns Over Rising Bills
Many customers say their utility costs have increased over the past two months. Several residents questioned the sharp change and asked for clearer explanations.
At a recent meeting, some attendees expressed frustration, saying the increases feel unexpected and difficult to understand. As a result, the issue has drawn public attention across the community.
Huntsville Utilities Explains Contributing Factors
Huntsville Utilities CEO Wes Kelley said colder winter temperatures played a major role. He noted the city experienced 31 days below freezing. Because of this, heating systems often switched into auxiliary mode, which uses two to three times more energy.
In addition, Kelley pointed to water leaks and pipe issues that affected some households. He also explained that more than 10% of customers settled past-due balances after a six-month grace period, which influenced billing patterns.
Overall, Kelley said a combination of winter conditions and household-specific issues contributed to higher bills compared to last year.
Programs Available to Help Customers
Kelley added that Huntsville’s utility rates remain competitive compared to similar-sized cities. In fact, Huntsville ranks among the lower-cost utility areas nationwide.
To help residents manage usage, Huntsville Utilities offers free energy audits. Customers can schedule an in-home visit with an expert to identify ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Therefore, residents experiencing high bills are encouraged to explore these resources and review their home systems.
