The Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama has broken ground on a new teen center in Huntsville, according to recent reports. The project aims to expand youth services and improve access to programs in the community.
New Teen Center Breaks Ground in Huntsville
The Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama began construction on a $2 million teen center this week. The new facility will be located on the campus of the James A. Lane Club.
Leaders say the expansion will help the organization serve more teens. As a result, it will reduce strain on existing space and improve overall program capacity.
Johnston Family Teen Center Expands Programs
The Johnston Family Teen Center will span more than 7,000 square feet. It will include workforce readiness classrooms and college and career preparation resources.
In addition, the facility will feature the Chappell Family Multi-Purpose Auditorium with a concession kitchen. It will also include the Spencer-Purdy STEM Lab, which will focus exclusively on teen programming.
Project Will Eliminate Waitlist
The new center will allow the organization to eliminate its current waitlist. CEO Patrick Wynn said the club currently serves about 300 kids at the location, which limits capacity.
With the expansion, teens will have their own dedicated space. Therefore, the main facility will have more room for younger members, and more youth will gain immediate access to services.
Construction is expected to take about 10 months. Once completed, the center will support expanded programming, improved access, and additional opportunities for local teens.
