Madison County moves forward with planning for a new $100 million courthouse.
Architecture Team Selected for Courthouse Project
The Madison County Commission has selected Goodwyn Mills Cawood to lead the architectural planning for the county’s courthouse replacement project. The agreement authorizes up to $6.83 million for architecture and engineering services tied to the planned development.
The project aims to replace the current courthouse with a new facility that can better serve the growing needs of the community. Officials estimate the overall construction cost could reach about $100 million.
Local Firm Joins Five-Year Effort
Goodwyn Mills Cawood will serve as the architect of record for the project. However, the firm will work closely with Huntsville-based Matheny Goldmon Architecture and Interiors throughout the process.
County officials expect the courthouse project to take about five years from planning through construction. Leaders say the new facility will be far more functional than the existing courthouse building.
Initial Study to Shape Final Design
The first phase of the project will focus on evaluating potential sites and building options. This review will help determine the final layout and structure of the courthouse project.
Officials expect the evaluation phase to take about 10 weeks. Current plans suggest the county could build either a single new courthouse or two separate buildings. The existing courthouse would likely be demolished under a separate contract.
Planning Services and Next Steps
In addition to architectural design, the project team will assist with landscape planning, security and data systems, courtroom consulting, traffic control planning, and lighting design. These services aim to ensure the courthouse meets long-term operational needs.
Volkert Inc. will serve as the owner representative overseeing the project. County leaders say the effort represents a major investment in Madison County’s future as planning continues.
