Huntsville launches study to improve safety along Governors Drive
Study Focuses on Busy Governors Drive Corridor
The City of Huntsville has approved a new contract to study transportation safety along Governors Drive and the nearby Medical District. The project will examine an 8.85-mile stretch of the corridor, running from 14th Street on the west side to Caldwell Lane in the Big Cove area.
In addition, the study will place special focus on a one-square-mile section within the Medical District that includes the Huntsville Hospital campus. Officials say this area experiences heavy traffic and frequent activity due to nearby medical facilities.
Part of Federal Safe Streets Grant
The project is funded through the federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Planning grant program. Huntsville received $640,000 in grant funding, while the city will contribute $160,000 in matching funds.
City leaders say the grant supports planning efforts aimed at making streets safer for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Huntsville has also received similar funding for the Pedestrian Access & Redevelopment Corridor project and for multimodal improvements along Holmes Avenue.
Improving Safety in the Medical District
The Governors Drive Corridor Study and Medical District Safety Action Plan will focus on improving accessibility and reducing serious crashes. Officials say the effort supports Huntsville’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to prevent fatal and serious traffic injuries.
At the same time, planners want to ensure traffic continues to move efficiently through one of the city’s busiest corridors. The study is expected to begin later this spring
