Huntsville is moving forward with a study that could lead to a new Interstate 65 interchange in Limestone County, according to online reports.
City Approves Study for Potential New I-65 Exit
The Huntsville City Council recently approved a contract worth more than $195,000 to evaluate the feasibility of a new interchange along I-65. The study will examine a stretch of highway between Exit 340, which connects to I-565, and Exit 347 at Huntsville-Brownsferry Road.
City officials hope the project will identify ways to improve traffic flow in one of North Alabama’s busiest transportation corridors.
Officials Look for Alternatives to Congested Interchange
According to city leaders, the existing I-65 and I-565 interchange experiences significant congestion as the region continues to grow. Expanding the current interchange could cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Therefore, officials want to determine whether a new interchange could provide a more affordable solution.
The study will analyze traffic patterns and develop multiple alternatives based on future growth projections. In addition, planners will evaluate how a new interchange could improve access to developing areas in western Huntsville and Limestone County.
Growth in Limestone County Fuels Interest
City officials say rapid growth near major employers has increased interest in a new interchange. The corridor serves key destinations, including the Mazda Toyota manufacturing facility, industrial developments, and expanding residential communities.
Meanwhile, additional growth is expected as new housing projects, schools, and business investments move forward in Huntsville-annexed portions of Limestone County. As a result, leaders want to identify transportation improvements before traffic conditions worsen.
The study will help determine the best location for a future interchange and secure approval from transportation agencies. Although Huntsville may not ultimately build the project, officials say the goal is to proactively plan for the region’s long-term growth and mobility needs.
