IKEA announces grand opening of first Alabama store in Huntsville

Swedish home retailer IKEA will celebrate the grand opening of its first Alabama store in Huntsville on Feb. 25.

Grand Opening Set for Feb. 25

IKEA U.S. announced that its Huntsville location will officially open Wednesday, February 25, marking the company’s first store in Alabama. The new store is located in the University Place Shopping Center at 6125 University Place Drive.

Rob Olson, interim CEO of IKEA U.S., said the expansion into North Alabama reflects the company’s commitment to bringing affordable, innovative home solutions closer to customers. Store Manager Brad Ellis added that the team looks forward to welcoming shoppers from across the region.

Festivities will begin at 8 a.m., with customers allowed to line up starting at 7 a.m. The first 100 children will receive complimentary soft toys, and early visitors can take part in giveaways while supplies last. Regular store hours will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Additionally, IKEA Huntsville is donating $10,000 to Crisis Services of North Alabama as part of its community outreach.

What Shoppers Can Expect

The 46,000-square-foot store features more than 5,000 products and fully furnished room displays designed to inspire customers. More than 2,000 items will be available for immediate takeaway.

Shoppers will also find a central planning area for personalized design consultations, as well as an As-Is department that offers budget-friendly and sustainable furnishing options. The store includes a Swedish food area serving popular menu favorites for guests to enjoy on-site or take home.

Nearby Businesses Prepare for Crowds

Businesses surrounding the shopping center are preparing for increased traffic. Alyson Pomeroy, owner of Batter Up Cake Bakery, said she hopes new visitors will discover her custom cake shop while in the area. Meanwhile, staff at Barberia Barber Shop plan to extend hours and add barbers to accommodate walk-in customers.

With large crowds expected, local business owners remain optimistic about the economic boost. And for shoppers facing long lines, Pomeroy offered simple advice: a chocolate chip cookie can help ease the wait.
