Community effort protects 65 acres on Green Mountain

A key stretch of land on Green Mountain will remain protected after a strong community fundraising effort.

Community Effort Protects 65 Acres

The Land Trust of North Alabama announced it purchased 65 acres on the western slope of Green Mountain. Community members raised $300,000 in just two months to secure the land and prevent future development. According to the organization, every dollar raised went directly toward protecting the property.

Development pressure remains one of the biggest threats to natural spaces in the region. Officials said conserving land like this helps preserve habitats for plants and wildlife. It also protects cave systems and waterways found on the mountain.

Connecting Protected Land

The newly protected property sits just north of Green Mountain Road. Because of its location, it helps connect existing conservation areas nearby. In particular, it links protected land near Blevins Gap Nature Preserve with other conserved areas on the south side of the road.

Although some of those areas are not yet open to the public, they remain protected for future use. As a result, the purchase strengthens a larger network of preserved land across the mountain.

Future Trail Plans

The Land Trust also plans to build a trail on the property in the future. Once completed, the trail could connect with nearby systems and expand outdoor access on Green Mountain.

Leaders say protecting land like this supports the region’s quality of life. It also ensures residents and visitors can continue enjoying the natural landscapes that make Huntsville unique.
