Sparkman Drive Bridge set for repairs

Huntsville plans to repair the aging Sparkman Drive bridge over Pinhook Creek, with construction expected to begin later this year.

Bridge Work Will Replace Aging Structure

According to online reports, the city received federal funding for improvements to the bridge just west of U.S. Highway 231 and Memorial Parkway.

The project will replace part of the existing bridge structure with new precast concrete beams and a new concrete deck. Crews will also remove the aging asphalt and make improvements to the roadway.

Once the bridge work wraps up, the city plans to repave and restripe the surrounding roadway.

Drivers Will Need a Detour

Construction will require a temporary detour using Max Luther Drive NW.

The project could affect traffic along Sparkman Drive while crews complete the bridge improvements. The work is expected to take about 60 calendar days.

Construction could begin in late 2026, although the exact start date has not yet been announced.

Public Comments Open Through August 31

The Alabama Department of Transportation is seeking input from people who use the route.

Residents can review the project plans and submit comments through ALDOT’s online public involvement process. Comments must arrive by Tuesday, August 31, 2026.

Residents who regularly travel Sparkman Drive may want to plan for the upcoming detour and follow project updates as construction approaches.
