Huntsville intersection upgrades to support new retail and development growth

Huntsville is investing nearly $10 million to improve traffic flow at the Northern Bypass and North Memorial Parkway intersection, where new development is adding to the area’s growth.

Intersection upgrades include new traffic signals

The Huntsville City Council approved a $9.9 million contract with Athens-based Grayson Carter & Son for the improvements. Plans include two new traffic signals, drainage work, additional turn lanes, electrical upgrades and streetlights.

The project is expected to begin soon, with completion anticipated by the middle of 2027.

Nearby development adds to traffic demands

The intersection sits near several major projects reshaping north Huntsville. The $240 million North Village Town Center is under construction southwest of the intersection and will include a Super Target and Home Depot.

Food City has also opened across Memorial Parkway, while a $41 million Huntsville Hospital freestanding emergency room is expected to begin construction nearby.

The city also approved a nearly $30,000 change order for work tied to the first phase of the Northern Bypass. Crews will install a temporary traffic signal at Mt. Lebanon Road to redirect drivers onto new lanes while existing travel lanes are rebuilt. Electronic message boards will alert motorists, and the signal will flash for three days before the change takes effect.

Other road projects move forward in Limestone County

The council approved two additional engineering contracts for road improvements in areas annexed by Huntsville in Limestone County.

A $788,000 contract with SAIN Associates will cover design work for northbound access improvements at the Greenbrier Parkway interchange on Interstate 565. The project also includes upgrades at Greenbrier Parkway and Greenbrier Road. The design contract is scheduled for completion by April 2028.

The improvements are intended to support traffic flow near major employers, including Mazda Toyota, Polaris and Amazon, as well as the planned Eli Lilly campus.

The city also approved a $144,839 contract with Kimley-Horn & Associates for a traffic impact study and intersection improvements along U.S. 72 West near East Limestone Road and Holladay Boulevard. The study is expected to be completed by July 2027.
