According to Redstone Arsenal officials, Gate 3 will temporarily close beginning Monday, July 6, because of staffing shortages affecting the Department of the Army Security Guard workforce.
Gate 3 to Close Beginning July 6
Gate 3, located on Redstone Road SW, serves as one of the primary entrances to the southern portion of Redstone Arsenal.
Officials said the temporary closure results from an unexpected reduction in security personnel. In addition, current hiring restrictions have made it difficult to quickly fill vacant positions.
At this time, Redstone Arsenal has not announced when Gate 3 will reopen.
Alternate Gates Recommended
To help reduce traffic delays, Arsenal officials recommend using Gate 1 on Martin Road SW or Gate 10 on Patton Road SW while Gate 3 remains closed.
Officials intentionally scheduled the closure to begin on Monday, July 6, giving employees, contractors, and visitors time to adjust their travel plans before the change takes effect.
Drivers should also expect heavier traffic at the alternate entrances, especially during the morning and afternoon commute.
Why Gate 3 Was Selected
According to Arsenal officials, a traffic study helped determine which entrance would have the least overall impact if a temporary closure became necessary.
The study found that Gate 3 handles less than one-third of the traffic volume seen at several of the installation’s other gates. As a result, officials selected it as the best option while they address staffing challenges.
Redstone Arsenal says it is working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. However, officials have not provided a timeline for reopening Gate 3.
