Broken household items? Huntsville group offers free monthly repairs

A Huntsville makers group is helping residents extend the life of everyday items through a monthly event where volunteers offer free repairs for broken belongings.

A monthly event gives broken items a second chance

Makers Local 256 hosts a Repair Cafe at its Five Points workshop, where around 10 to 15 volunteers use their skills to repair items brought in by community members.

At the October event, approximately 30 people arrived with items ranging from a broken hairdryer and a storm-damaged umbrella to a miniature Christmas village with faulty lights. Volunteers managed to repair all the items by the end of the evening.

The event brings together people with different specialties, including electronics, sewing, woodworking and other hands-on skills.

A workshop built for creativity and collaboration

Makers Local 256 provides members access to tools and equipment that may be difficult to maintain at home. The workshop includes sewing and embroidery machines, 3D printers, woodworking and metalworking tools, and laser cutters.

The organization has approximately 200 active, dues-paying members. Membership is available on a suggested sliding scale of $30 to $40 per month, and members can access the workshop around the clock.

The space encourages people to share knowledge, work on projects and learn from others with different skills.

Community members can explore the workshop

For members, Makers Local 256 offers a place to develop practical abilities and connect with other creative people. Longtime member Ryen Buchanan first joined at age 14 to learn skills for building props and sets for school theater productions.

The group also welcomes visitors during its open studio nights on Tuesday evenings, giving Huntsville residents an opportunity to explore the workshop and its creative community.

Through its Repair Cafe and shared workspace, Makers Local 256 encourages residents to repair useful belongings instead of sending them straight to the trash.
