Huntsville Parks & Recreation’s Girls Garage program is expanding its impact by helping women and teens build confidence through hands-on car care training.
Program builds confidence through hands-on learning
Girls Garage offers free workshops for participants ages 15 and older. Sessions focus on practical skills such as checking oil, changing a tire, and jump-starting a battery.
The program returned after a strong debut in fall 2025. Since then, it has continued to attract residents looking to gain basic automotive knowledge.
In addition, City of Huntsville Fleet Services mechanics assist with instruction. This support allows participants to receive more personalized, hands-on guidance.
Community connection drives engagement
Workshops take place at Brahan Spring Recreation Center, where participants learn in a supportive group setting. While some arrive with hesitation, many quickly gain confidence as they complete tasks for the first time.
As the session progresses, participants share experiences and encourage one another. Therefore, the program fosters both skill-building and community connection.
Program organizer Melissa Long said the goal is to help participants feel empowered to learn new skills beyond car care.
More sessions planned as demand grows
The workshops remain open to a wide age range, including teens and adults. One remaining spring session is scheduled for May 16, with additional programming planned for the summer. REGISTER HERE.
As a result, Huntsville Parks & Recreation continues to expand offerings that promote practical learning and community engagement.
