Fed funds include $2 million for Sparkman Drive Bridge

North Alabama will receive more than $21.2 million in federal funding following the passage of three Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations bills, according to U.S. Sen. Katie Britt.

Funding for Bridges, Roads and Transportation

Britt, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the funding will support transportation and infrastructure projects across the region.

ALDOT will receive $2 million to replace the Sparkman Drive Bridge in Huntsville and another $2 million to replace Swayback Bridge in Marshall County. In addition, $1 million will go toward widening and planning improvements along Mooresville Road in Limestone County.

The FY26 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development bill also includes $10 million for the National Scenic Byways Program, which supports routes such as the Natchez Trace Parkway in Alabama.

Major Investments in Higher Education

Several North Alabama universities will also benefit. The University of Alabama in Huntsville will receive $10 million for artificial intelligence research infrastructure. Meanwhile, the University of North Alabama will receive $1.024 million for nursing education equipment and $5 million to expand services at the Anderson Center for Innovation.

Athens State University will receive $205,000 to enhance its LaunchBox innovation and entrepreneurship center.

Broader Federal Support for NASA and Defense

During a recent update at the Von Braun Center, Britt also highlighted larger federal investments secured through appropriations legislation. She pointed to more than $1.3 billion for the Space Launch System, over $2 billion for the development of two independent human landing system vehicles, and at least $110 million for nuclear thermal propulsion systems at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

Additionally, the legislation provides $55 million to Redstone Arsenal for a propulsion systems building through the military construction and Veterans Affairs bill. Britt said the appropriations package strengthens transportation, research, and defense priorities important to North Alabama’s continued growth.
