The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Alabama in Huntsville has reached a major milestone, welcoming its 1,000th member during its fall open house.
More Than 70 Classes Available This Fall
According to online reports, the milestone came during an open house where attendees could explore more than 70 upcoming classes offered both on campus and online.
OLLI at UAH provides learning opportunities for adults who want to stay active, curious and connected. Classes do not require tests, grades or traditional homework.
The program covers a wide range of interests. Members can also take part in lectures, cultural outings, social activities and field trips.
Membership starts at $40, while individual courses may have additional fees.
Learning, Connection and Community
OLLI welcomes adults 50 and older, including those who are working, retired or semi-retired. However, the program does not enforce a strict age requirement.
Instead, it focuses on people who enjoy learning and connecting with others.
Members come from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. They can also learn from fellow members, university instructors and community experts who lead courses and special programs.
In addition, the program offers special activities and lectures through its bonus offerings. Many of these opportunities come at no additional cost for members.
The program has a long history at UAH. It began in 1993 as the Academy of Lifelong Learning. Then, in 2006, it officially joined the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute network with support from the Bernard Osher Foundation.
A Milestone for Huntsville’s Active Adult Community
Reaching 1,000 members highlights the growing interest in lifelong learning and social connection in the Huntsville area.
OLLI gives members opportunities to keep learning while meeting people with similar interests. The program also creates ways to explore new subjects without the pressure of traditional academic programs.
Members can take multiple courses throughout the year, attend special events and participate in cultural experiences. The program also provides access to selected university resources and activities.
