A new accessible playground has officially opened at Joe Wheeler State Park in Lauderdale County, marking a major upgrade to the park’s family amenities, according to online reports.
New Accessible Playground Opens at Joe Wheeler State Park
Joe Wheeler State Park has unveiled a state-of-the-art playground designed to accommodate children of all abilities. Officials say the space is intended to enhance recreation and improve the overall visitor experience.
Alabama State Parks leaders and community partners celebrated the opening on Friday. As a result, the park continues its broader effort to expand accessible outdoor recreation across the state.
Community Funding Supports Major Park Upgrade
The project was funded through contributions from the Alabama State Parks Foundation, including lead donations from the Daniel Foundation and the Thompson Foundation. Additional funding also came from the foundation itself.
In addition, officials said the investment reflects a broader push to improve visitor amenities across Alabama’s state park system. Therefore, private and nonprofit partnerships continue to play a key role in park development projects.
Part of Wider State Parks Investment Plan
The playground is part of a larger series of upgrades funded by a state parks bond initiative approved in 2022. Other projects include lodge construction, campground expansions, and park renovations across Alabama.
In addition, Joe Wheeler State Park has recently added other improvements, including lodge renovations and a new beach pavilion. As a result, officials say the park continues to grow as a key outdoor destination in north Alabama.
