UAH Neighborhood Nursing sees early success, expands

The University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Neighborhood Nursing initiative is expanding after successfully providing healthcare services to hundreds of North Alabama residents during its first months of operation.

Neighborhood Nursing Serves More Than 500 Residents

The UAH College of Nursing launched the Neighborhood Nursing program in fall 2025 to help address healthcare needs in underserved and rural communities throughout North Alabama. The initiative delivers services directly to neighborhoods through health screenings, wellness education, referrals, and ongoing community outreach.

During a June 18 update, university officials reported that the program reached more than 500 residents across five communities in just nine weeks of active service.

Dr. Azita Amiri, executive director of Neighborhood Nursing and associate dean for research at the UAH College of Nursing, said the program is already making a meaningful difference in the communities it serves.

According to reports, the initiative also provides hands-on training opportunities for nursing students while helping residents gain better access to healthcare resources.

Expansion Announced for Jackson County

Following the program’s early success, UAH leaders announced plans to expand Neighborhood Nursing into Jackson County. Officials are also evaluating future opportunities in Morgan and DeKalb counties.

Faculty members say many nursing students enrolled at UAH come from rural communities across North Alabama and are eager to use their education to support the areas where they grew up.

Program leaders noted that Neighborhood Nursing allows students to develop clinical skills, leadership experience, and community connections while serving residents who may face barriers to healthcare access.

Community Partnerships Help Bring Care Closer to Home

According to online reports, the initiative works alongside several healthcare organizations, including Huntsville Hospital Health System, Crestwood Medical Center, WellStone, and HAPPI Health.

Supporters say the program’s neighborhood-based approach helps remove obstacles that can prevent people from receiving preventive care and health education. By meeting residents where they live, organizers hope to improve long-term health outcomes across the region.

Community members interested in supporting the initiative can volunteer, donate supplies, or provide financial contributions to help expand services in underserved areas.

University officials also announced details for SHINE 2026, the College of Nursing’s annual symposium, which is scheduled for November 12 on the UAH campus. The event’s theme, “The Power of Us: Healthy Neighborhoods Start Here,” reflects the mission of Neighborhood Nursing and its focus on building healthier communities through local partnerships and accessible care. Tickets for the event are expected to become available on September 1.
