New study ranks Huntsville as one of the nation’s smartest cities

According to a new WalletHub study, Huntsville ranks as the 17th most educated metropolitan area in the United States, thanks to its highly educated workforce and strong educational institutions.

Huntsville Earns Top 20 National Ranking

WalletHub compared the nation’s 150 largest metropolitan statistical areas using 11 education-related metrics. The rankings measured both educational attainment and the overall quality of education.

Huntsville earned an overall score of 67.69 out of 100, placing 17th nationwide. The city ranked 22nd for educational attainment and 10th for education quality and attainment gap. Meanwhile, Ann Arbor, Michigan, claimed the top overall ranking with a score of 94.48.

The report highlights Huntsville’s reputation as one of the country’s most educated communities, reflecting its growing population of highly skilled professionals.

How WalletHub Calculated the Rankings

WalletHub based 80% of each city’s score on educational attainment. This category measures the percentage of adults who have earned high school diplomas, college degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and graduate or professional degrees.

The remaining 20% came from education quality and attainment gap. Researchers evaluated public school quality, university quality, access to higher education, summer learning opportunities, and educational equity among different demographic groups.

Together, these categories measured both the education level of residents and the strength of each community’s educational system.

Why Huntsville Scored So Well

Several factors likely contributed to Huntsville’s strong performance. The city continues to attract engineers, scientists, researchers, and technology professionals who support its aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing industries.

In addition, Huntsville benefits from respected colleges and universities, strong public schools, and a workforce with a high percentage of college and graduate degree holders.

The study also recognized Huntsville’s performance in educational quality and efforts to reduce educational attainment gaps, helping the city earn a top-10 ranking in that category.

As Huntsville continues to grow, education remains one of the city’s greatest strengths. Its combination of talented workers, quality schools, and higher education institutions continues to attract new employers, businesses, and families to North Alabama.
