Huntsville is losing a longtime seafood restaurant as Red Lobster prepares to close its University Drive location after more than five decades.
Huntsville location will close Sept. 6
According to online reports, Red Lobster will close its only Huntsville restaurant on Sunday, Sept. 6.
The restaurant sits at 1818 University Dr. NW. It first opened in Huntsville in 1975, giving the location a history of more than 50 years in the community.
For now, customers can continue visiting the restaurant before the closure. Its listed hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
A longtime Huntsville restaurant
The closure ends a long run for the University Drive location.
Red Lobster faced major changes after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2024. The process led to closures across the country, while some restaurants temporarily shut down before reopening.
The Huntsville restaurant closed during that period but returned to business on Aug. 28, 2024. Now, nearly two years later, it will close again.
The closure of the Huntsville and Montgomery locations will also reduce the number of Red Lobster restaurants operating in Alabama.
Final days for local seafood fans
Red Lobster has served seafood at the Huntsville location for generations. Its menu includes longtime favorites featuring lobster, crab, shrimp and fish.
The company has also promoted responsible seafood sourcing as part of its broader business practices. Those efforts include working with suppliers and fisheries that follow sustainability and regulatory standards.
However, the immediate focus for local customers is the upcoming closure. Anyone hoping for one last meal at the University Drive restaurant has until Sept. 6 to visit.
The Huntsville closure marks the end of an era for a restaurant that has been part of the local dining scene since the 1970s.
