A new specialty clinic in Huntsville is expanding access to health care for veterans across North Alabama.
New Huntsville VA Specialty Clinic Opens
The Birmingham VA Health Care System marked the opening of the Huntsville South VA Specialty Care Clinic with a ribbon-cutting at UAB Medicine Huntsville.
The 7,000-square-foot clinic will offer cardiology, chemotherapy infusion, podiatry and neurology services. Leaders say the goal is to reduce long drives for veterans who previously had to travel to Birmingham or seek care in other communities.
Dr. Ladi Kukoyi, executive director of the Birmingham VA Health Care System, said bringing infusion treatments to Huntsville is especially important for cancer patients who require frequent visits.
The clinic is part of a partnership with University of Alabama at Birmingham Medicine in Huntsville. It builds on a 2024 agreement with Fox Army Health Center to expand services for veterans and active-duty military members.
U.S. Rep. Dale Strong welcomed the addition but said he will continue advocating for a full VA health care center in North Alabama.
Veterans Transportation Program Launches Locally
Alongside the clinic opening, the VA is expanding its Veterans Transportation Service in the Huntsville area.
The program provides eligible veterans with rides to and from VA medical appointments within a 50-mile radius. Officials say the service complements the existing Beneficiary Travel system and works with veterans service organizations, community providers and government partners.
All veterans eligible for VA health benefits with authorized appointments may qualify, depending on local availability.
More Facilities Planned for Greenbrier
VA officials also announced plans to open additional facilities in Greenbrier. Proposed projects include a 20,000-square-foot Women’s Health Clinic, a 20,000-square-foot Mental Health Clinic with space for home-based primary care and social work, and a 24,000-square-foot Dental Clinic.
Leaders say the expansions aim to ensure veterans across North Alabama can access comprehensive care closer to home
