Huntsville is moving forward with a major redesign of Holmes Avenue to improve safety and accessibility for all travelers.
Multimodal Improvements Approved
The City of Huntsville has approved a design and signed a contract with Volkert to begin construction administration for the project. The work covers 3.25 miles of Holmes Avenue from Spragins Avenue to Sparkman Drive.
Planned improvements include sidewalks, multi-use paths, dedicated bike lanes, transit shelters, landscaping, decorative lighting, and street furniture. Officials say the goal is to make Holmes Avenue safer and more inviting for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and drivers alike.
Funding and Program Support
The project is funded through a $21.6 million federal grant awarded in 2024 and $9 million in city matching funds. Dennis Madsen, Urban and Long-Range Planning Manager, said the grant comes from the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program, which supports safer transportation options for all modes of travel.
Key Connections and Timeline
Holmes Avenue connects major parts of Huntsville, including downtown, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Cummings Research Park. The corridor also serves high-traffic sites such as Clearview Cancer Institute, the Huntsville VA Clinic, and The Rock Family Worship Center.
Volkert will finalize engineering designs, with construction expected to start in late 2027 and completion projected for summer 2030. The project aims to improve connectivity, safety, and access as Huntsville continues to grow.
