Several major projects are moving forward across Huntsville, including transportation improvements, new development plans, and expanded community spaces.
According to city officials and online reports, the Northern Bypass project is nearing completion, while additional improvements are planned for Old Big Cove Road and Maple Hill Cemetery.
Northern Bypass Expected to Open All Lanes by Year’s End
The $35.3 million Northern Bypass project is approaching the final stages of construction. According to online reports, Huntsville officials said the project is on schedule to have all lanes of traffic open by the end of the year.
The project stretches from Pulaski Pike to North Memorial Parkway, with the remaining major construction work focused on the section between Mt. Lebanon Road and Toyota Motor Manufacturing. City officials said much of the roadway is already nearing completion.
The bypass has also helped encourage additional growth in the surrounding area, including plans for the upcoming North Village Town Center, a $240 million development planned near the Northern Bypass and Memorial Parkway intersection.
Old Big Cove Road Improvements Move Forward
Huntsville officials have also approved plans for the next phase of improvements along Old Big Cove Road. According to reports, the project will include upgrades along approximately 1.6 miles between Taylor Road and Claudia Drive.
Planned improvements include additional travel lanes, sidewalks, bike lanes, curb and gutter upgrades, and new streetlights. Federal funding is expected to cover most of the engineering design costs, with the city contributing the remaining portion.
Maple Hill Cemetery Plans New Scatter Garden
A new memorial space is also planned at Maple Hill Cemetery, Huntsville’s oldest and largest cemetery. According to online reports, the city is moving forward with plans for a scatter garden designed as a peaceful location for families to honor loved ones.
The project will include design, surveying, and construction planning services and is expected to expand available memorial options within the historic cemetery.
The scatter garden will provide families with a dedicated outdoor space for reflection, remembrance, and the respectful scattering of cremated remains.
