Huntsville selected for 2026 Census Test door-to-door visits

Residents across the Huntsville metro area may see census workers at their doors this summer as part of a 2026 Census Test, according to online reports.

Census visits planned across Huntsville area

The U.S. Census Bureau will conduct in-person visits for households that have not yet completed the 2026 Census Test.

These visits will take place in the Huntsville metro area, including Madison, Meridianville, and Moores Mill.

Officials estimate about 81,000 housing units are participating in the test. In addition, census takers and specially trained U.S. Postal Service workers will conduct visits through August 31.

These visits may occur on weekdays or weekends. Some may take place as late as 9 p.m.

What the 2026 Census Test is evaluating

The Census Bureau is using this test to study new methods planned for the 2030 Census. The goal is to improve accuracy and ensure a complete population count.

In addition, Huntsville and Spartanburg, South Carolina, are the only two official test regions. The bureau is also testing partnerships with postal workers to improve response rates.

Officials say the pilot program uses trained postal employees to help build trust in neighborhoods. These workers also receive background checks and must follow strict confidentiality rules.

How residents are contacted and what to expect

Residents first received invitations to complete the questionnaire online in May. They can still respond through the Census Bureau’s website using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

The survey collects basic household information such as age, race, education, and citizenship. It typically takes about 40 minutes to complete.

Furthermore, all census responses are protected under federal law. Officials stress that the information is confidential and used only for statistical purposes.

Finally, both online responses and in-person visits will end on August 31 as the test concludes.
