New scatter garden coming to Huntsville’s historic cemetery

Maple Hill Cemetery is preparing to add a new memorial space that will provide families with a dedicated place to honor loved ones who chose cremation.

The project marks a first for a city-owned cemetery in Huntsville.

Maple Hill Cemetery to Add First City-Owned Scatter Garden

City officials recently approved an engineering services contract to begin planning and designing a scatter garden at Maple Hill Cemetery.

The project includes design work, surveying, and construction administration. Work is expected to take approximately one year before the new memorial space is completed.

Peaceful Space Planned for Families

The scatter garden will provide a designated area where families can respectfully scatter the cremated remains of loved ones while gathering in a quiet setting for remembrance and reflection.

In addition, the project is intended to expand the memorial options available at Maple Hill Cemetery and offer a thoughtfully designed space for those choosing cremation over traditional burial.

Continuing the Legacy of Huntsville’s Historic Cemetery

Established in 1818, Maple Hill Cemetery is Huntsville’s oldest and largest cemetery. Today, the historic property spans approximately 81 acres and serves as the final resting place for generations of Huntsville residents.

The addition of the scatter garden reflects the city’s ongoing efforts to meet the changing needs of families while preserving the history and significance of one of Huntsville’s most well-known landmarks.
