Why Huntsville was ranked no. 1 in the South

Huntsville has earned another national honor after being named the best place to live in the South in a new ranking by WorldAtlas.

The recognition highlights the city’s strong economy, affordable housing, and growing arts and culture scene.

Huntsville Tops WorldAtlas’ Southern Rankings

WorldAtlas placed Huntsville at No. 1 on its list of the nine best places to live in the South for 2026. The ranking included cities across the region, with Huntsville standing as the only Alabama community to make the list.

Other cities recognized include Chattanooga, Tennessee; Bowling Green, Kentucky; Greenville, South Carolina; Tyler, Texas; Roanoke, Virginia; Lafayette, Louisiana; Macon, Georgia; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Strong Economy and Quality of Life Earn High Marks

According to WorldAtlas, Huntsville’s combination of economic opportunity and affordability helped secure the top spot.

The publication highlighted the city’s technology-driven economy, relatively affordable housing market, and expanding arts community. It also pointed to major employers such as NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal, and Cummings

Research Park is a key driver of Huntsville’s continued growth.

In addition, WorldAtlas recognized the city’s balance of career opportunities and quality of life, making it an attractive destination for both residents and newcomers.

Arts, Attractions, and Community Continue to Shine

Beyond its economy, Huntsville’s cultural attractions also received praise in the ranking.

WorldAtlas highlighted destinations such as Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, the Huntsville Botanical Garden, the Panoply Arts Festival, and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center as examples of the city’s vibrant arts and entertainment scene.

As Huntsville continues to grow, national rankings like this reflect the city’s reputation as a place that offers career opportunities, community amenities, and a high quality of life for residents.
