A popular Huntsville recreation center is set for major improvements after city leaders approved a key design contract, according to online reports.
Huntsville Approves Major Recreation Center Renovation
The Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center will undergo a large-scale renovation following approval from the Huntsville City Council. The council signed off on a $1.3 million design services contract with Nola | VanPeursem Architects to begin planning the upgrades.
District 1 Councilwoman Michelle Watkins previously hosted a town hall on April 2 to discuss the project. She said the renovation will modernize a heavily used community space and improve the overall experience for residents.
Planned Upgrades Inside and Outside the Facility
The project includes a wide range of interior and exterior improvements. Inside the building, plans call for updated finishes, a redesigned entrance and lobby, new HVAC systems, and added air conditioning for the gym. In addition, officials plan upgrades to pool equipment and related systems.
Outside the facility, the renovation will add new basketball and pickleball courts. It will also improve the playground, expand parking, and upgrade drainage. Moreover, planners will relocate the nearby bus stop and enhance walking paths around the campus.
Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett said the center has long served as a key gathering place. He added that the upgrades will help future generations create lasting community memories.
Additional City Infrastructure Projects Approved
Along with the recreation center renovation, the council approved several road and connectivity projects across Huntsville. These include new roadway construction near County Line Road and Old Highway 20, as well as a new three-lane roadway connecting Garth Road to Dotson Drive.
Officials also approved a multi-use path project along Bailey Cove to improve pedestrian and bicycle access to Aldridge Creek. In addition, utility relocation work on Winchester Road will support future road improvements and traffic flow upgrades.
These projects aim to improve transportation capacity and connectivity across growing areas of the city.
