Huntsville has been awarded a $6,098,667 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to purchase six new hybrid diesel/electric transit buses, marking the first hybrid buses in the city’s fleet.
Modernizing the Fleet
The new buses will replace aging vehicles and provide larger, cleaner, and more efficient transportation with reduced carbon emissions, improved fuel efficiency, and lower maintenance costs. The project supports Huntsville’s long-term plan to modernize its transit system and ensure reliable service for residents.
Funding and Implementation
The total cost for the six buses is approximately $7.18 million, with the city contributing $1,078,022 in July to complete the funding. The Low-No bus project is ready for immediate implementation through an existing contract with Gillig, LLC once the grant agreement is finalized.
Transit Impact
Huntsville Transit currently operates 16 buses on 12 fixed routes across more than 100 square miles and 20 peak paratransit vehicles, serving a population of over 143,000. Daily ridership exceeds 2,500 passengers, who will benefit from smoother, more comfortable rides on the new hybrid buses.
