A North Alabama lawmaker is calling for upgrades to an aging weather radar system that plays a key role in storm tracking, according to online reports.
Lawmaker Pushes for Radar Replacement
Dale Strong is advocating for a new weather radar system serving North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley. He raised the issue during a recent oversight hearing focused on the National Weather Service.
Strong emphasized the importance of reliable radar coverage for public safety, especially during severe weather events.
Aging System Raises Reliability Concerns
The radar system in Hytop, located in Jackson County, has been in service for more than 25 years. Over time, it has experienced outages and periods of downtime.
Because of these issues, gaps in coverage can occur during critical weather situations. As a result, concerns have grown about the system’s ability to consistently provide accurate and timely warnings.
Huntsville’s Role in Weather Innovation
Strong also highlighted Huntsville’s role in weather research and forecasting. He noted collaborations involving NASA and University of Alabama in Huntsville.
In addition, local forecasters continue to operate under demanding conditions, often working long hours to deliver warnings that directly impact their communities. Therefore, upgrading the radar system could strengthen both regional forecasting and public safety efforts.
