A major resurfacing project on Interstate 65 will enter a new phase this weekend in Morgan and Limestone counties, according to online reports.
New Phase Begins on I-65 This Weekend
The Alabama Department of Transportation said work will resume Sunday as part of a $16.5 million effort to resurface more than 23 miles of I-65. The project stretches from Hurricane Creek north of Vinemont through Morgan County and into Limestone County near the I-565 interchange.
Contractor Rogers Group will handle the next phase of construction. Crews plan to resurface the interstate from just south of State Route 36 in Hartselle to south of the I-565 interchange near Exit 340.
Drivers Should Expect Nightly Lane Closures
ALDOT officials said crews will begin pavement patching before milling and resurfacing operations start. To reduce daytime traffic impacts, most lane closures will happen between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Sunday through Thursday nights.
However, drivers should still expect delays due to single-lane closures during construction hours. Officials encourage motorists to slow down and remain alert in work zones throughout the project area.
Previous Work Included Bridge and Overpass Improvements
Last year, the first phase of the project resurfaced portions of I-65 in southern Morgan County and northern Cullman County. Crews also raised two local road overpasses to improve clearance and repaired a bridge added after the original contract award.
Although major work from the first phase has finished, ALDOT said some areas could still experience temporary lane closures for smaller maintenance items.
The resurfacing project remains one of several ongoing infrastructure upgrades along one of Alabama’s busiest interstate corridors.
