3 remaining F-14 Tomcats could soon head to Huntsville

Three iconic F-14 Tomcat aircraft may soon head to Huntsville under new legislation advancing through Congress, according to online reports.

Senate Advances F-14 Transfer Proposal

The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bill on May 1 that would allow the Navy to transfer its final three F-14 Tomcat aircraft to Huntsville’s U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

Lawmakers named the proposal the “Maverick Act.” U.S. Sen. Tim Sheehy introduced the bill to preserve the historic aircraft for public display, airshows, and educational events.

According to Military Times, the Navy retired the F-14 in 2006 after more than 30 years of service. The aircraft became known worldwide for its speed, combat history, and pop culture appearances.

Why the F-14 Tomcat Still Draws Attention

Many aviation fans still consider the F-14 one of the most legendary fighter jets ever built. The aircraft gained renewed popularity after the 2022 movie Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise.

The bill’s title references the movie, which featured an F-14 during one of its major action scenes. Supporters say the legislation would help preserve an important part of military aviation history.

Meanwhile, Congressman Abe Hamadeh introduced a companion bill in the House. Hamadeh, a former Army officer, said many service members have a strong connection to the aircraft.

What Comes Next for Huntsville

The legislation must still pass the House before it can move to President Donald Trump for final approval.

If lawmakers approve the proposal, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center could receive and restore the Navy’s last remaining F-14 Tomcats. The move would add another major attraction to Huntsville’s growing aerospace and aviation community.
