Redstone Arsenal and the Solid Waste Disposal Authority (SWDA) received recognition this week for their work to keep Huntsville’s air clean. The Air Pollution Control Board presented the awards during its annual Clean Air Achievement Ceremony, which highlights local organizations that take proactive steps to reduce pollution.
“Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “These organizations are setting an example, showing why Huntsville is a great place to live, work, and play.”
Innovative Energy Projects Cut Emissions
In 2024, Redstone Arsenal partnered with SWDA to launch a 12.4-MW turbine powered by steam from SWDA’s waste-to-energy facility. This system generates approximately 60,000 MWh of electricity each year, replacing energy that would otherwise come from TVA. The project significantly lowers emissions, reducing nitrogen oxides by about 6 tons, sulfur dioxide by 8 tons, and greenhouse gases by roughly 20,000 tons annually.
According to Darlene Elliott, Huntsville’s Natural Resources Director, the initiative demonstrates how local partnerships can make a measurable difference in air quality.
Clean Air Awards Promote Environmental Awareness
SWDA, a nonprofit agency, manages solid waste services for Huntsville and Madison County. The Clean Air Awards, established in 1997, highlight voluntary efforts to prevent pollution, encourage sustainability projects, and educate the public about environmental stewardship.
“These awards celebrate community collaboration that helps Huntsville stay healthier and cleaner,” Elliott said
