Fourteen upgraded historic cabins are now open at Monte Sano State Park, blending 1930s charm with modern comfort.
Historic Cabins, Modern Comfort
State and local leaders cut the ribbon Friday on the renovated bluff-side cabins, which the Civilian Conservation Corps originally built in the 1930s. Crews preserved the rustic craftsmanship while updating interiors to enhance comfort and convenience.
Each cabin now features renovated kitchens and bathrooms, new furniture and fixtures, and refreshed interiors. Several cabins offer sweeping valley views from Monte Sano Mountain, giving guests a scenic retreat just minutes from downtown Huntsville.
Enhancements Across the Park
In addition to the cabins, park officials highlighted expanded campsites with improved accessibility, offering more space for families and groups. New and upgraded bathhouses in campground and day-use areas also add convenience for visitors.
A new family-style bathhouse includes four fully private stalls, each equipped with a toilet, shower and sink. The design prioritizes safety, privacy and accessibility for guests of all ages.

Part of Statewide Park Investments
The cabin renovations were funded through an $85 million bond issue approved by Alabama voters in 2022 to support state parks. Officials say the upgrades aim to attract new visitors while improving the experience for longtime guests.
Additional bond-funded projects are underway across the state, including improvements at Cheaha State Park, Lake Lurleen State Park and Gulf State Park.
With the renovations complete, leaders say Monte Sano continues to balance preservation and progress, offering a historic mountain escape with updated amenities for today’s travelers.
