Huntsville continues to see falling crime rates as the city grows.
Significant Year-to-Year Reductions
Newly released 2025 crime data from the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) shows continued declines in major and violent crimes. From 2024 to 2025, violent crime fell 18%, major crime dropped 9%, and all offenses listed in the annual report decreased 6%.
HPD Chief Kirk Giles noted that each number represents real people and families affected by crime.
Long-Term Safety Gains
Since 2019, Huntsville’s population has grown 24%, yet violent crime has fallen 50% and overall major crime is down 33%. Specific reductions include robberies (28%), burglary and breaking & entering (21%), and aggravated assaults (20%). Other crime categories remained stable with no significant spikes.
Factors Behind the Decline
HPD leaders attribute the continued reductions to strong officer presence, inter-agency collaboration, technology, city investments, and community involvement. Curt Worshek, director of the North Alabama Multi-Agency Crime Center, said the declines reflect sustained, data-driven policing strategies.
The department plans to release the full 2025 annual report in March.
