Schools expand classroom cameras in special education rooms

Huntsville City Schools is expanding classroom cameras to enhance student safety.

Cameras Added in Resource Classrooms

The school board approved installing cameras in resource classrooms, where at least half of the students receive special education services. These cameras aim to provide an additional safety measure and support staff in responding to incidents.

Limited Use and Access

Footage will only be reviewed if an incident is reported to school leaders. It will not be used for routine teacher evaluations or constant monitoring. Access is restricted to select staff, parents of the student, investigators, law enforcement, and legal counsel.

Compliance with State Law

The board emphasized that activating these cameras follows state law requirements. The move is intended to balance enhanced safety with respect for privacy and proper oversight.
