$2.4 billion submarine plant launches in Alabama

One of the largest maritime investments in U.S. history is now underway in northwest Alabama, as a $2.4 billion submarine manufacturing facility opens in Cherokee, according to online reports.

Massive Investment Transforms Former Site

Hadrian is converting a former rail car plant into a high-tech submarine components facility. The total investment reaches $2.4 billion, with the company contributing a large portion and additional federal funding supporting the project.

The site spans more than 2 million square feet and will focus on producing critical parts for U.S. Navy submarines. Leaders say the project marks a major step forward for the nation’s maritime industrial base.

Jobs and Economic Impact for Alabama

The plant is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs once it reaches full capacity. In addition, officials anticipate long-term economic growth and new investment across the Shoals region.

Lawmakers and industry leaders say the facility could also bring additional business opportunities and support industries tied to defense and manufacturing. As a result, northwest Alabama may see continued expansion in the coming years.

Supporting U.S. Defense and Production

The facility will produce components for Columbia-class and Virginia-class submarines. These parts play a key role in construction timelines, so increasing production could help speed up submarine delivery.

Officials also emphasized the importance of public and private partnerships in making the project possible. They say the plant strengthens national security while investing in local communities and workers.

The first phase of the facility is expected to reach full production within about two years. Additional construction and expansion efforts will continue in the months ahead.
