$16.5M in fresh federal funding targeted for North Alabama

Several North Alabama infrastructure projects could receive federal funding under a new U.S. House spending bill, according to online reports.

House bill includes millions for North Alabama projects

The U.S. House is expected to vote on legislation that would provide approximately $16.5 million for infrastructure improvements across North Alabama.

The funding is included in the Fiscal Year 2027 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development bill. In addition, the proposal focuses on transportation networks, energy infrastructure, and economic development projects.

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong said the investments are intended to support the region’s rapid growth while improving mobility and public infrastructure.

Road improvements planned across Madison County and beyond

Several major road projects are included in the proposal. For example, Madison County could receive funding to widen Jeff Road and Blake Bottom Road, two corridors that have experienced increased traffic due to population growth.

In addition, the City of Madison could receive funding to expand Wall Triana Highway by adding a center turn lane.

Huntsville’s Northern Bypass project is also included in the bill.

Other proposed improvements would support roads in Lawrence County and Decatur. Officials say these projects aim to reduce congestion and improve transportation efficiency throughout the region.

Airport, energy, and workforce projects also included

The bill goes beyond road construction. It also proposes funding for improvements at Huntsville International Airport, including upgrades to aircraft infrastructure.

Furthermore, the North Alabama Public Energy District could receive funding to begin construction of a 137-mile natural gas pipeline designed to improve regional energy capacity and reliability.

The proposal also includes support for workforce development. Calhoun Community College could receive funding to complete a healthcare training facility aimed at preparing workers for high-demand careers.

Finally, supporters say the investments would strengthen transportation, energy, and workforce infrastructure while helping North Alabama keep pace with continued economic growth.
