$1.3B Raytheon defense awards include Huntsville operations

Raytheon has secured $1.3 billion in federal contracts tied to two missile programs, with Huntsville included in work on one of the systems.

Huntsville Included in SM-3 Work

According to online reports, the Missile Defense Agency and Army Contracting Command awarded Raytheon two contracts totaling about $1.3 billion.

The larger award totals $745 million and covers production and assembly of the SM-3 missile interceptor. The system supports U.S. Navy ships and forms part of the nation’s missile defense capabilities.

The United States and Japan will receive the systems under the agreement.

Raytheon will perform the work in Tucson, Arizona, and Huntsville. The contract currently runs through February 2031.

For Huntsville, the award adds another major defense project to the region’s expanding aerospace and national security sector.

Second Contract Supports TOW System

Raytheon also received a $536 million award from the Army to support full-rate production of its TOW Weapon System.

The contract includes engineering services as the Army moves forward with production. The work will take place in Tucson, with the current completion target set for August 2027.

The TOW system uses long-range missiles designed for a range of battlefield applications. Its capabilities also include penetrating fortified targets.

RTX, Raytheon’s parent company, says military forces in more than 40 countries use the system. It has also been integrated with thousands of ground vehicles, helicopters and other platforms.

Another Defense Investment for Huntsville

The new contracts highlight Huntsville’s continued role in the U.S. defense industry.

The Rocket City has a long history of supporting missile defense, aerospace and military programs. The presence of the Missile Defense Agency and other federal defense organizations also strengthens that ecosystem.

With the SM-3 contract extending into 2031, the Huntsville portion of the work could provide continued activity for the region’s defense manufacturing and engineering workforce.

The award also reinforces the broader connection between Huntsville and major national security programs as the city continues to attract federal investment and defense-related work.
