Huntsville City Schools expands virtual academy across North Alabama

Huntsville City Schools will expand its Artemis Virtual Academy to students across five North Alabama counties beginning in the 2026-27 school year, according to online reports.

Artemis Virtual Academy Expands Beyond Huntsville

For the first time, Huntsville City Schools will allow students outside district boundaries to apply for the online learning program. The Huntsville City Board of Education recently approved policy changes that open enrollment to eligible students in Jackson, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan counties.

Previously, only students living within Huntsville City Schools attendance zones could enroll in the virtual academy. However, district leaders said growing interest in online education led to the expansion.

District Leaders Cite Growing Demand for Virtual Learning

School officials said many North Alabama families have requested more flexible education options in recent years. Artemis Virtual Academy offers a fully online learning model for students in grades K-12. The program includes digital coursework, teacher support, and individualized academic services.

Dr. Jennifer McKinney said the district wants to provide more families with access to flexible learning opportunities while maintaining strong academic standards.

Officials also said enrollment for out-of-district students will depend on available space each year. Families must reapply annually to remain in the program.

What Families Should Know About Enrollment

According to Huntsville City Schools, accepted students will not pay tuition to attend the virtual academy. However, the district will review applications on a yearly basis before granting approval.

Applications for the 2026-27 school year are now open through the program’s online enrollment system. School leaders expect interest to remain high as virtual education continues to grow across Alabama.
