Huntsville Hospital CEO addresses concerns after $450M Crestwood deal

Huntsville Hospital leaders say employees at Crestwood Medical Center will not see pay cuts following its recent acquisition, according to online reports.

CEO Addresses Pay and Staffing Concerns

Huntsville Hospital Health System CEO Jeff Samz spoke to the City Council about the $450 million purchase of Crestwood Medical Center. He said the system completed the acquisition on March 31 after learning last fall that the previous owner planned to sell.

Samz explained that the hospital was already profitable. However, much of its revenue previously left north Alabama. Now, he said, those funds will stay within the local community.

He also confirmed that employees will not face pay reductions. In addition, the system aims to retain current staff. However, workers must follow the same policies used across all system facilities.

Samz noted that staffing levels remain stable. Physicians who worked at Crestwood before the purchase continue to practice there.

Investment and Local Control

The health system has already committed $4 million for upgrades at Crestwood. These improvements include major capital needs such as a new roof.

Samz also emphasized that the acquisition brings local governance to the hospital. Previously, an out-of-state company controlled operations. Now, local leadership will guide decisions moving forward.

However, Samz said the system cannot control healthcare prices. Instead, federal programs like Medicare and Medicaid, along with insurance companies, determine costs.

Growth Plans and Council Updates

City leaders also discussed future healthcare expansion. The Council approved a zoning change to allow a new standalone emergency room in north Huntsville.

In addition, officials approved rezoning for more than 59 acres near North Memorial Parkway and Bob Wade Lane. Developers plan to build the $240 million North Village Town Center on nearby land.

The project will include major retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. As a result, city leaders expect continued growth in the area.
