Huntsville’s city limits are expected to grow by roughly 650 acres following a City Council vote next week.
City Council to Consider Annexations
The Huntsville City Council will vote on two annexation requests at its January 22 meeting. The larger request involves approximately 648 acres located just off Interstate 565 in Limestone County.
The property sits on the south side of I-565 and stretches east and west of Swancott Road. It also borders the growing Greenbrier Preserve community, where more than 1,100 homes are planned and hundreds are already under construction.
School Site and Future Development
City officials say about 100 acres of the annexed land will support Huntsville City Schools. The district plans to build a new Pre-K through eighth-grade school on the site, with room for future expansion. The project appears in the district’s 10-year, $600 million capital plan and targets a 2028–29 opening.
Meanwhile, developers plan to use the remaining acreage for residential and mixed-use development. GL McCrary Farms LLC submitted the annexation request for the larger parcel.
Smaller Annexation and Growth Context
In addition, the Council will consider annexing a 2.8-acre property on the south side of Capshaw Road, east of Balch Road. Balch, LLC, represented by Chad and Dorothy Gilliam, requested that annexation.
These actions continue Huntsville’s rapid expansion trend. Last year alone, the city annexed more than 3,000 acres, its largest increase since 2008. As a result, Huntsville now covers more than 230 square miles—slightly larger than the city of Chicago based on recent census data.
