Flu cases surge in Alabama ahead of the New Year

Flu cases have spiked early this season in Alabama, according to online reports.

Early Surge in Flu Cases

Health officials are noting a rapid increase in influenza cases across the state. Reports indicate that flu cases have doubled in just the past week, making it one of the earliest surges seen in recent years.

Guidance for Residents Experiencing Symptoms

Medical professionals advise that the last place to visit with flu symptoms is the Emergency Room. Local family physician Dr. Tim Howard recommends contacting your primary care provider first if you experience a cough, fever, or runny nose. Emergency rooms prioritize patients with life-threatening conditions, so flu patients may face long waits.

Dr. Howard explained that the flu is a common virus, and once symptoms appear, individuals are contagious. “Flu is much more classic — once you have symptoms, you’re infectious and should stay away from others,” he said. According to reports, flu cases began appearing around Thanksgiving this year, marking the first significant rise since last year.

Flu Statistics and Prevention Tips

Data from the Alabama Department of Health shows that the week before Christmas, 2.71% of statewide emergency department visits tested positive for influenza. That figure jumped to 6.26% during the week of Christmas.

Dr. Howard emphasized that this is only the beginning of flu season. “Typically, cases will spike, but we’re not at peak levels yet,” he noted. He also stressed that it’s not too late to get a flu shot. While it may not completely prevent infection, the vaccine can reduce the severity of symptoms.

“If you get a flu vaccine, your body will have antibodies. They may not perfectly match the virus, but they can lessen symptoms. Be smart — wash your hands, and if you feel sick, stay home,” Dr. Howard said.

He added that, similar to the virus, the vaccine takes about seven days to become effective. Getting vaccinated now can help protect against rising flu cases in the coming weeks.
