Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle outlined an ambitious list of road projects aimed at improving traffic flow and safety across the city during his State of the City address on Nov. 14 at the Von Braun Center.
Major Road Projects on the Horizon
The city’s wishlist includes a five-lane upgrade for Winchester Road, widening projects for U.S. 72 East and West, and interchanges at I-565 for Resolute Way (exit 13) and Memorial Parkway. Also included is the early-stage Arsenal East Connector, a new access road linking I-565 to Redstone Arsenal Gate 1.
Mayor Battle emphasized the importance of these projects, saying, “Huntsville is the regional employment center for north Alabama. We have to have an efficient, swift and safe transportation network. It’s vital.” Estimated costs include $60 million for the Resolute Way interchange and $30 million for the Arsenal East Connector.
Ongoing Projects and Improvements
Several projects are already nearing completion, including the $44.2 million Mastin Lake–Memorial Parkway overpass and the $43 million Northern Bypass from Pulaski Pike to Memorial Parkway. These efforts aim to connect Redstone Arsenal to Cummings Research Park, North Parkway, Meridianville, and Hazel Green, enhancing mobility for thousands of commuters.
The city is also finishing the last five segments of Martin Road, opening a key corridor from I-565 to Gate 7 at Redstone Arsenal. These upgrades complement new developments like the $240 million North Village Town Center, which will feature a Super Target and Home Depot near the Northern Bypass intersection.
Housing and Workforce Development
In addition to infrastructure, Mayor Battle highlighted affordable housing as a priority. Huntsville is on track to add 4,000 new housing units by year’s end, with over 20,000 added since 2020. Projects like the Mill Creek Choice Neighborhood Initiative will create mixed-income communities, workforce housing for Huntsville Hospital employees, and support downtown development with job opportunities and recreational activities.
