Huntsville breaks ground on major expansion of U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum

Just one week before Veterans Day, the City of Huntsville officially broke ground on a major expansion of the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum at John Hunt Park.

A significant upgrade for a historic site

The $9.98 million project will nearly double the museum’s size to 35,000 square feet, adding space to display artifacts dating back to the American Revolution. The expanded facility will include modern offices, a conference room, restrooms, and an improved visitor experience.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, the Redstone-Huntsville Chapter of AUSA presented a $100,000 donation to support the expansion.

Honoring veterans through growth

“This is a proud day for our city and, most importantly, for our veterans,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “It’s our great privilege to honor them through this project, which gives us new space to remember and recognize the heroes of yesterday and today.”

District 4 Council Member Bill Kling added that the project symbolizes Huntsville’s continued commitment to honoring military service. “Everyone in Huntsville should look at this museum as a point of pride,” Kling said.

Looking ahead to completion

Designed by City architect Jeffrey S. Alpha, A.I.A., the expansion will be built by Chorba Contracting Corporation with a 480-day construction timeline. The museum also brought on consultant David Towry to create a new strategic plan for organizing exhibits chronologically.

When complete, the project will enhance how the museum tells the story of American service members and strengthen Huntsville’s reputation as a city that deeply values its veterans.
