Huntsville proposes $343M budget for FY2026

The City of Huntsville is preparing to vote on a $343 million operating budget for fiscal year 2026, aiming to balance infrastructure growth with quality-of-life investments. The City Council will consider the proposal at its September 25 meeting, following a work session this Friday.

Major spending priorities

The plan includes $18 million for street resurfacing and $29.25 million for new road projects, targeting key corridors such as Old Big Cove Road, Swancott Road, Winchester Road, Holmes Avenue and Old Monrovia Road. Funding is also set aside for commercial redevelopment along Memorial Parkway North and improvements to Big Spring Park East and Huntsville Depot Park.

Public safety and city services

To meet the needs of a growing population, the budget calls for 10 new Huntsville Police positions and 31 additional Parks & Recreation employees to staff three recreation centers expected to open next year. City employees would also receive a 2% cost-of-living raise.

Parks, greenways, and redevelopment

Planned investments include renovations at Dr. Richard Showers Sr. Recreation Center, expansion of the North Huntsville Greenway, and redevelopment funding for the Choice Neighborhood Initiative, Cummings Research Park and Ditto Landing.

Mayor Tommy Battle said the proposal reflects the city’s rapid growth while maintaining a frugal approach: “The money we are saving in the 2025 fiscal year can roll back into the budget for the upcoming year.”

The full budget document is available on the city’s website. A final council vote is scheduled for September 25.
