The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) president Charles L. Karr will retire in May 2026, concluding a five-year tenure that emphasized research growth, industry partnerships, and campus development.
Karr to step down after five years leading UAH
Karr will leave office after the spring 2026 commencement, marking the end of a period that saw expanded research activity and stronger ties between UAH and the Huntsville business and defense sectors.
During his tenure, UAH reported $640 million in research expenditures over five years. In addition, the university recorded record enrollment in both 2024 and 2025, according to system officials.
U.S. Rep. Dale Strong praised Karr’s leadership, noting that more than 70% of UAH graduates remain in Alabama after completing their degrees.
Growth in research, partnerships, and campus development
Karr’s administration focused heavily on strengthening partnerships with Redstone Arsenal, Cummings Research Park, and local industry. Furthermore, he worked to expand academic outcomes and student recruitment efforts across campus.
“Serving as president of UAH has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Karr said when announcing his retirement in 2025.
Campus expansion and leadership transition underway
One of the major initiatives during Karr’s presidency was Exploration Plaza, a 58-acre mixed-use development designed to support innovation and workforce development in Huntsville’s high-tech economy.
Meanwhile, the University of Alabama System has already identified finalists for the next UAH president, with an appointment expected in the coming weeks.
