According to online reports, Huntsville City Schools has approved a revised student dress code that will take effect at the start of the 2026-27 school year, following more than a year of community feedback and review.
What’s changing in the new dress code?
The updated policy simplifies several previous clothing requirements while introducing clearer expectations for students.
Among the most notable changes:
- Students wearing leggings, yoga pants, or jeggings are no longer required to wear tops that extend below the waist.
- Shirts must fully cover the front and back of the torso while students are sitting, standing, and raising their arms.
- Undergarments must remain completely covered.
- Hoods are now prohibited and classified as head coverings under the policy.
- School leaders said the revisions were intended to create more consistent and straightforward guidelines for students and staff.
- Community feedback shaped the revisions
District officials said the updated dress code followed approximately 18 months of research, discussions, and survey responses from parents, students, teachers, and staff.
Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton said the goal was to develop a policy that reflected community input while helping schools place a greater emphasis on classroom instruction instead of clothing concerns.
School board members also noted that many survey responses expressed concerns about previous rules disproportionately affecting clothing commonly worn by girls. The revised policy was designed to establish expectations that apply more consistently to all students.
When the new policy begins
The Huntsville City Schools Board of Education approved the updated dress code during its July meeting.
The new guidelines will go into effect when students return for the 2026-27 school year, beginning Wednesday, and will apply across the district’s schools.
