The City of Huntsville has introduced its first proposed sewer rate increase in two decades. The change aims to fund major infrastructure upgrades to the sewer collection system and five wastewater treatment plants.
Why the Rate Change Matters
City officials are recommending a monthly sewer bill increase from $24.15 to $29.15 for the average residential customer. Despite this adjustment, Huntsville’s rates would remain well below Alabama’s average of $52.14. Starting in 2026, rates would rise by $1 each year through 2034. By then, the average monthly bill would reach $39.15—still significantly lower than the current state average.
Supporting Long-Term Infrastructure
The $150 million capital plan will target aging portions of Huntsville’s sewer system, some of which date back to the 1950s. These upgrades are essential to keep the system reliable and compliant with environmental regulations. Like other utilities, Huntsville’s wastewater system must evolve to meet modern demands and future growth.
What Happens Next
The City introduced the proposal during the May 22 City Council meeting. Council members will vote on it during their upcoming session on June 12. Until then, the City continues to engage with residents and provide information about the proposed changes and the long-term benefits they would bring.
