Huntsville is securing a $6 billion Eli Lilly campus, marking the largest private economic development project in Alabama history.
City Investment and Land Offer
The city is providing Eli Lilly a 260-acre site with a 10-year performance obligation. In addition, it is offering $2 million for workforce development and up to $250,000 for project costs. An adjacent 240-acre parcel will be held for potential future expansion. These actions give the company space to build and grow while protecting the city’s long-term interests.
Eli Lilly Campus Plans
Eli Lilly will construct a 750,000-square-foot campus. Shane Davis, Huntsville’s Urban and Economic Development Director, described it as a “college-type research center with manufacturing facilities.” Construction will require about 3,000 workers. The campus will create at least 449 high-paying full-time jobs with an average salary of $112,700. The company’s full investment is expected to exceed $4.2 billion.
Economic Impact and Incentives
The project qualifies for a 10-year non-educational tax abatement under the Alabama Constitution. City leaders expect the investment to boost the local economy through jobs and construction activity. The development reinforces Huntsville’s role as a hub for high-tech and life sciences industries. Officials view it as a long-term win for the city and the region.
