Huntsville breaks ground on $56 million elementary and Magnet schools

Huntsville City Schools officially broke ground Thursday on a major two-school project: the new $56 million Montview Elementary School and a reimagined STEM Magnet Elementary School that will share a single campus. The project marks another significant investment within the district’s 10-year, $600 million capital plan.

A Shared 18-Acre Campus Designed for the Future

The two schools are rising on the current Montview Elementary site, located west of North Memorial Parkway and east of Callahan Drive, with new entrances planned along Greenhill Drive. The 18-acre project will include one 110,000-square-foot building, evenly divided between the neighborhood school and the magnet program.

Although they share a facility, both schools will have dedicated spaces tailored to their instructional missions. The new campus will serve pre-K through fifth grade and is scheduled to open in August 2027.

The campus design received Planning Commission approval in October, and the STEM magnet school will replace the existing Academy for Science and Foreign Language (ASFL) Elementary.

Enhanced Learning Environments for Neighborhood and Magnet Students

Montview Elementary will continue to support families in the Lee High feeder pattern. The new design includes specialized classrooms, flex labs, a full-size gym, multiple playgrounds, and designated safe spaces.

Meanwhile, the STEM Magnet Elementary School will welcome students from across Huntsville. The redesigned academic model includes STEM labs, interactive teaching walls, flexible learning rooms, and multi-use instructional areas that align with the school’s hands-on STEM focus.

Superintendent Clarence Sutton said the project reflects the district’s commitment to “deliver the very best for students,” noting that Montview Elementary recently rose to a B on the state report card while ASFL Elementary increased to an A.

A Major Milestone in the District’s Long-Range Investment Plan

As Huntsville City Schools moves through its broader capital plan, the Montview/ STEM magnet project stands out as one of its most transformative elementary-level investments. Leaders say the combined approach strengthens academic pathways, supports teacher collaboration, and improves access to innovative learning environments.

Architects McMillan Pazdan Smith, program managers TCU Consulting Services, and builders First Team, Inc. are leading the project.
Together, these efforts position the district for continued growth and rising academic performance as Huntsville’s student population expands.
