Huntsville is moving forward with its goal of building a connected, citywide greenway network. The City Council has approved construction contracts for two major trail projects that will expand access, improve safety, and link some of the community’s most popular destinations.
Meek Greenway Extension
The Meek Greenway project was awarded to Alabama Rogers Group, Inc. for $1.8 million. It will add a 1.78-mile, 12-foot-wide multi-use path stretching from Stallworth Drive at Alabama A&M University to Highway 72. The work also includes a paved parking lot.
This extension will run through established North Huntsville neighborhoods and strengthen connections to downtown via the Skybridge/greenway system. Once complete, it will help link destinations including Brahan Spring Park, John Hunt Park, and Ditto Landing along a continuous north-to-south corridor.
Tollgate Greenway Expansion
The Tollgate Greenway project, awarded to Grayson Carter & Son for $1.76 million, will connect the Bankhead Parkway parking lot to Monte Sano State Park. The 1.65-mile paved extension will double the length of the existing trail and provide a safer, smoother route for pedestrians and cyclists heading to the mountain’s summit.
Funding support includes $500,000 raised by the Land Trust of North Alabama and a $150,000 contribution from Huntsville Utilities. The design also calls for wider paved shoulders to improve accessibility for all users.
Building a Connected System
“These projects are about more than just adding trail miles,” said Dennis Madsen, Manager of Urban and Long-Range Planning. “We’re building access to assets that people already love — from Alabama A&M and Monte Sano to Ditto Landing and Downtown Huntsville.”
The City’s Greenway Master Plan envisions a total of 257 miles of interconnected trails. Today, Huntsville has just over 46 miles of completed greenways, with nearly 39 more planned in the next five years and 173 identified as long-term projects.
By steadily expanding the network, Huntsville is positioning itself to become one of the Southeast’s most livable and accessible greenway cities.
