Huntsville honors longtime landscape director Joy McKee by naming the new arboretum in her honor.
Joy McKee Arboretum Approved
The Huntsville City Council has officially approved naming the new arboretum at John Hunt Park the “Joy McKee Arboretum.” McKee recently retired after 22 years as the city’s Landscape Director, leaving a legacy of environmental conservation and expanding public green spaces.
A Legacy of Green Spaces
During her tenure, McKee championed nature-based recreation, community volunteering, and educational programs. She also helped grow Huntsville’s tree canopy and improve access to parks and trails, creating more opportunities for residents to enjoy the outdoors.
Community Recognition and Impact
Beyond her city role, McKee contributed to Huntsville through 28 years on the Operation Green Team board and 26 years on the Beautification Board. Landscape Management Director Brian Walker called the arboretum a “fitting tribute” to her decades of dedication to the city’s environment.
The Joy McKee Arboretum will be located at Airport Road and Alex McAllister Drive, near the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex, and will serve as a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy Huntsville’s natural beauty.
